Changing Your Research Project, Supervisor, or Employer

Change of Institution

Your NIH LRP award is portable and can move with you to a new employer provided that you continue to meet the same basic eligibility criteria and your proposed change is approved by the NIH Institute or Center (IC) that funded your LRP application. Before NIH can make a determination regarding your contract, you will need to submit a Change of Institution application (COI) to us. This application is similar to your original application.

As a participant, it is your responsibility to notify the NIH as soon as you know that you will be changing institutions. You will be required to provide updated information including your new contact information, a new research activities document, update biographical sketch, and updated funding information. Be certain to complete the information requested with the IC's mission in mind as this will be important for continued support.

You will also need to provide the contact information for your new Research Supervisor and new Organizational Contact. We will contact your new colleagues for information in support of your move and forward your completed COI application to the NIH IC that funded your LRP application.

To initiate a COI, please complete this form and email it to us at Once you initiate a COI, your LRP contract will be temporarily suspended until all the documents are received and NIH has reviewed your application.

If your COI application is approved, the LRP system will be updated with the new information and your contract will be placed back into Active status.

If your COI application is not approved, you will be notified of the decision and provided with an opportunity to further explain your research or to realign your research situation to comply with the basic eligibility criteria and/or funding priorities of the NIH IC that funded your LRP application.

The length of the COI review process varies and depends greatly on how quickly you and your colleagues submit the required documentation to the LRP.
