EXTEND YOUR LRP PARTICIPATION AND CONTINUE RECEIVING PROGRAM BENEFITS

Renewals
As an LRP participant, you will initially be awarded a two-year loan repayment contract. If you will still have qualified educational debt at the end of that contract, you may apply for a competitive renewal contract, which may be awarded for a one- or two-year period.

Eligibility Requirements

You are eligible for an LRP renewal award if you previously had an LRP contract which ended in the last five years or you currently have an LRP contract which ends in the next fiscal year, and you:

  • Continue to conduct qualified research for at least 50 percent of your total level of effort
  • Continue to receive research funding from a qualified, domestic nonprofit source
  • Remain a non-federal employee (or qualified part-time federal employee)
  • Remain a permanent U.S. resident (or a U.S. citizen or national)
  • Continue to have qualified educational debt
NOTE: For renewals, you do not need to meet the educational debt-to-institutional base salary ratio required of new applicants. That is, your qualified educational debt does not need to equal at least 20 percent of your institutional base salary. There is no limit to the number of times you can extend your LRP participation. As long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria and have outstanding repayable debt, you may apply for a renewal.

Applying for Renewal

Apply for an LRP renewal during the application cycle for the fiscal year in which your current contract will end.
  • Renewal applications must be submitted online according to the same application cycle, procedures, and deadline as new applications. Apply Here using this link or the tab on the menu bar above to start your application.
  • Renewal applications are evaluated using the same criteria as new applications, plus two additional criteria:
    • Research accomplishments during the previous LRP contract
    • Progress toward development as an independent investigator
  • Renewal applications are competitively reviewed. Submission of a renewal application does not assure award of continued benefits.
  • Renewal contracts are issued for a one- or two-year period. You will need to list an Organizational Contact (OC) on your application, who will be asked to provide institutional certification for one or two years. If the OC provides certification for one year, NIH can only consider funding the renewal for one year. If the OC provides certification for two years, then NIH may choose to fund the renewal for one or two years. NIH's decision about the length of renewals is based on its budget and funding priorities.
